Grab Your Passport to End Hunger
On Saturday, September 26th, VLK Architects competed in the 17th annual Fort Worth/Tarrant County CANSTRUCTION Competition. This one-of-a-kind design and build competition is sponsored by the Fort Worth chapters of the Society for Design Administration (SDA) and the American Institute of Architects (AIA). During the event, architects, designers, and engineers design and build sculptures out of canned goods which are then donated to the Tarrant Area Food Bank (TAFB). This year, VLK Architects' design, Architectural Marvels, consisted of 3,961 donated cans and was awarded Honorable Mention.
Realizing that hunger effects people all over the world as well as the citizens of Tarrant County, the VLK team wanted to build a structure that represents the buildings and structures that stand out as expressions of culture and rich history in the world. The design, Architecture Marvels, was designed to make viewers want to grab their passports to end hunger and travel to prominent structures around the world. The three dimensional structure consisted of architectural landmarks, spanning 4 millennia across the globe, and highlighted different styles and cultures around the world such as the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Great Wall of China, the Golden Gate Bridge, and 30 St Mary Axe, widely known as The Gherkin.

CANstruction Fort Worth/Tarrant County is a community service project of the Fort Worth Chapters of the Society for Design Administration (SDA) and of The American Institute of Architects (AIA) under the auspices of the national SDA and its CANstruction Foundation. The local SDA and AIA chapters also present the local awards. Over the past 15 Years, Fort Worth/Tarrant County CANstruction teams and their sponsoring firms have donated nearly 767,000 pounds of food to Tarrant Area Food Bank, which is equivalent to approximately 639,000 meals.
